During this term, you will complete two short Reader Response essays.  These guidelines remain the same for each of the essays.  Each Reader Response essay should:

  • Be about one significant aspect of one of the reading selections for this class that we have covered prior to the assignment. Focus on just one element of the text; do not write a full review, summarize a short story, or paraphrase a poem.  You should explain how and why this particular element of the text affected you personally.  For example, you may write about why you really disliked the character Julie Patimkin in Goodbye, Columbus, or how “Defender of the Faith” made you consider how we are all frustrated by conflicting loyalties.  You may not write a line-by-line interpretation of “Behind Grandma’s House,” retell the entire plot of The Dark Knight Returns, or provide a full literary review of “Robot Dreams.”
  • Be at least two and not more than three pages in length. That means the paper should start about one-third of the way down the first page, fill a second page all the way to the bottom, and possibly roll onto a third page.
  • Be typed and printed in proper MLA format—12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and single-sided. Your last name and a page number should be included as a header in the upper-right corner of each page (like this one).  It should be left-justified with 1” margins on all sides.  If you use direct quotations from the text, they should be in proper MLA format.  The essay must be broken into paragraphs at appropriate junctures.
  • Be properly proofread for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and logical consistency. Although this is not a College Composition course, the purpose of those classes was to prepare you for doing this in all of your classes.  If you need assistance, first use the “Review” toolbar in Microsoft Word, and think about the changes suggested by the computer.  Then take your paper to the SLC and have one of the tutors there review it.  Don’t let them change your thoughts; do allow them to help you express those thoughts in grammatically correct and properly spelled English.
  • Be written exclusively in either the first- or third-person point-of-view. DO NOT USE SECOND-PERSON POINT-OF-VIEW (“You”).  The person reading your essay is not engaged in a conversation with you; do not use conversational language that suggests the reader has agency or input.  Use active verbs and frame any arguments you are making strongly.  Avoid sentences that begin with “I believe,” “I think,” or “In my opinion,” because they are unnecessary and weaken your argument.
  • Avoid the use of obvious filler phrases and sentences, sometimes known as “deadwood.”  These are broad, generic statements that often are unsupported (or unsupportable) and contribute nothing meaningful to your essay except filling the page—for instance, “Everyone knows a family that has experienced divorce.”  Don’t be unnecessarily wordy, either—being concise is an important quality of good writing.  If you can’t think of more to say that actually says something meaningful, you need to do some more thinking
