Objective: This assignment aims to critically analyze media representations of gender and gender diversity through the lens of psychology. Students will explore how psychological concepts, theories, and research can be applied to understand and critique the portrayal of diverse gender experiences in the media. Additionally, students will develop a resource bundle that addresses important gender-related issues and proposes solutions informed by the discipline of psychology.

Instructions:

Part 1: Media Analysis (8%)

Media Selection:

Choose two different types of media sources (e.g., advertisements, films, TV shows, news articles, social media campaigns) that portray gender or gender diversity.
(Write a sentence or two on what they cover, what you will discuss about them)
Ensure resources are attached as appendixes to your assignment submission.

Analysis (4%):

Critically analyze each media source, considering the following:
Representation of diverse gender identities (cis-gender, non-binary, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals).
Stereotypes and biases present in the portrayal of gender.
Impact on shaping societal attitudes towards gender.

Application of Psychological Concepts (4%):

Apply at least three psychological concepts or theories discussed in the course to analyze and interpret the media representations. For example, consider how social cognitive theory, stereotype threat, or gender schema theory may help explain or critique the portrayals.

Part 2: Resource Bundle (12%)

Identification of Issues (4%):

Based on your media analysis, identify two key issues related to gender or gender diversity portrayed in the media.

Integration of Psychological Insights (4%):

Using insights from psychological theories, propose solutions or interventions that address the identified issues. Explain how psychological principles can inform effective advocacy.

Creation of a Resource List (4%):

Develop an advocacy resourse list with tangible resources or strategies to promote awareness and change regarding the identified issues. This could include infographics, social media campaigns, educational materials, or other creative and effective tools. (You just need to list these, you can write a sentence as to why if wanted)

Submission Guidelines:

Your assignment should be submitted as a written report, not exceeding 2000 words.
Include references to at least five scholarly articles or course readings related to psychology and gender (at least two must be from course materials).
Use APA 7th edition style for citations and references.
Clearly label the sections of your assignment, such as “Media Analysis” and “Resource Bundle.”

Assessment Criteria:

Depth of analysis and application of psychological concepts.
Critical evaluation of media representations and identification of issues.
Creativity and effectiveness in proposing advocacy solutions.
Clarity of communication, proper use of APA 7th edition style, and adherence to submission guidelines.
