I. Introduction

Nowadays many people argue about government control, freedom, and fairness. Kurt Vonnegut’s story “Harrison Bergeron,” written in 1961, shows the world in a future where everybody in America is equal, and the way the government neutralizes physical, intellectual, or appearance advantages. To make sure that citizens won’t outshine each other. Government used used this approach, if somebody is attractive they must wear ugly masks, they handicap individuals who have superiority in height and strength and are made to wear weight. Also they used a tool that was a kind of headphones that created noise so that a person couldn’t think clearly. On the charge of this system, the person named Diana Moon had the title Handicapper General, she made everyone equal by using force and instilling a sense of fear. Even Though at first glance Vonnegut’s work may seem as an alert against achieving perfect equality and government control which limits the actions of local citizens, we can also look at it as a way to understand how powerful people try to keep their control under the system often , unfairly. Marxist theory argues that dominant ideologies often conceal class structures and maintain power through cultural institutions, including media, law, and family. From a Marxist point of view, “Harrison Bergeron” shows how those in power use rules and ideas to stay in control, pretending that everyone is equal while keeping real power for themselves and stopping people from realizing the truth.(Marx)
