As we consider these issues in relation to working with children and families, it is important to recognize how these topics impact our own thoughts, feelings, and reactions.
The readings from Konrad (Chapter 13) and Webb (Chapter 16) focus on work with immigrants and refugees. When considering the level of derision in our country surrounding issues of immigration, it is likely that each of you have your own opinions and beliefs that are based on experiences, upbringing, and other factors.
As social workers, it is important to be aware of how experiences, perceptions, and emotions can impact your social work practice with children. You will be asked to reflect on at least 2 prompts, create a virtual sand tray responding to the prompts, and post a 3–5-minute video in Canvas sharing and describing your sand tray as well as your response to the reflection prompts.

- What has been the most impactful loss you have experienced in your life so far, and what types of support was available to help you cope?

- What are your thoughts or perceptions about people who stay in abusive situations even when it may harm them or their children?
- Share about an experience where you have learned from someone whose background and experiences were different from your own.
- What are some ways that your race, customs, faith, experiences or beliefs shape your estimations of people from unfamiliar nations?
- How have the opinions or actions of those around you impacted your thoughts and beliefs about individuals who are different?
- Please share about any experiences of anti-immigrant sentiment you have experienced or witnessed towards someone of a different nationality?
- What are some of your own cultural beliefs or values? What has influenced the development of these beliefs/values?
- If you have experienced discrimination based on your cultural background, please share about it.

- Create a 3–5-minute video in Canvas sharing and describing your sand tray in conjunction with your responses to the reflection prompts.
- Make sure to draw connections between your self-reflection and your social work practice with clients. How could this help or hinder your work with clients? Be sure to note any biases that you recognize and how you will address them.
- Also be sure to reference how your reflection relates to course materials (textbook, videos, articles, etc.).
