This academic essay, to be submitted online, will afford you the opportunity to make original historical arguments based on your analysis/interpretation of primary and secondary sources in no more than TNR 12 point, 5 double-spaced pages. You will choose any one or two of the primary sources assigned from Weeks 4 through 7. In this essay, you are free to use your textbook and as many other secondary sources assigned in this course. If you feel the need to draw on an external secondary source, please ensure that the information you are seeking cannot be found in any of the course’s materials.
As you critically analyze your selected primary source(s), please debate–either for or against–the idea that:
the colonialism of Africa was inevitable, and that there was nothing Africans could have done about it
In other words, your thesis statement should declare whether you are for the motion stated above or not.
And in addition to meeting the basic requirements of academic writing, an “Above Average” essay will present a nuanced stance, accounting also for the position not taken by the paper.
Please ensure that your papers are properly cited in footnotes (or endnotes if that is more convenient).
