Week 1: Studying Technology & Culture Discussion-Prompts and sources

Choose five terms from the vocabulary list for this week that are new to you or that are discussed in our Learning Resources in a way you have not thought about. Make sure you choose a few terms from the readings on culture and a few from the readings on technology.

For each of your five terms:

  1. Provide a brief definition in your own words. This should be a paraphrase of the definition from one of the Learning Resources. Do not go to resources outside the class. Please see tips on paraphrasing here

  2. OR if you want to test how helpful and effective AI Tools are for tasks such as defining terms in a particular field, you can ask an AI Tool like ChatGPT to provide a definition. After getting the definition, compare it to the one in our Learning Resources and assess its accuracy. Then, state if it is accurate or inaccurate. If the AI Tool’s definition is inaccurate, lacks important details, or is incomplete, you should make necessary clarifications to make it more aligned with the Learning Resources. Make sure to cite your use of AI using the MLA guidelines here: https://style.mla.org/citing-generative-ai/

  3. Cite the source where you got the definition from for your paraphrase or AI comparison in MLA format.

  4. Explain in a few sentences how you think this term might help you look at technology and culture in a new way in this class.

  5. 300-350 words

Week 2: Technology & History Discussion

Choose two of the historical resources (not the articles defining technological determinism & social constructivism) from the Required Learning Resources that interest you and then do the following:

  1. Put full citations for both of the resources in MLA format at the top of your post

https://leocontent.umgc.edu/content/umuc/tus/humn/humn344/2248/week-2/medieval-technology.html?ou=1239963
  1. For each resource, explain whether it takes the approach of social constructivism or technological determinism? Or is there a combination of both approaches? How do you know this? What specifics from each resource give you hints about its approach?

  1. Determine which resource you think is most successful with its approach and explain why.

  1. Use at least one quote from each resource in your discussion. Make sure to provide in-text citations for both quotes in MLA format.
