What’s Your Frequency? Describing Data With Numbers and Graphs & Analyzing Your Weather!

PAGE 1-  You will be choosing a dataset of interest to you. First, visit the dataset link to view the datasets https://www.hawkeslearning.com/Statistics/dis/datasets.html and the websites with free data document which contains links for publicly available datasets (See attached) Choose a dataset from the PDF, or find a dataset on your own.

  1. State the name of the dataset, identify the source of the data, and attach the dataset to your post.
  2. Identify a quantitative variable in the dataset that can be used to create a frequency table. (Please do not select the same variable inside of the same dataset as a classmate.)
    • State whether the variable is discrete or continuous.
    • Create a frequency distribution table with the following columns:
      • Class Limits
      • Frequency
      • Relative Frequency
      • Cumulative Relative Frequency
    • Copy and paste the table directly into your discussion post or attach it as a separate file
PAGE 2- Analyzing Your Weather!

Main Post: Export your daily weather summary from the last month for your city (SAN JOSE, CA) or ZIP code (95112), or a nearby city, using NOAA’s Climate Data Online Search.  https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/search

  1. Open the data in Excel and select one of the quantitative weather variables to analyze. (Avoid using precipitation data.)
  2. For the variable selected, run the Descriptive Statistics->Summary statistics, available in the Excel Data Analysis Tools, or use the individual Excel functions to calculate the measures listed below. Review the directions for opening the data analysis toolpak (see attached)
  3. Share the summary table or the following descriptive measures:
    • Mean
    • Median
    • Mode
    • Maximum
    • Minimum
    • Sample standard deviation
  4. Calculate and share the 1st and 3rd quartiles for the variable using the “quartile.inc” function in Excel.
  5. Clearly state the 5-number summary for the variable (Minimum, Quartile 1, Median, Quartile 3, Maximum) in your post.

See guidance for a table of descriptive statistics and a 5-number summary table.
