PLEASE READ!!!!!! YOU MUST USE THE SOURCE I ATTACHED DOWN BELOW NO OTHER SOURCES!!!
For this assignment, please read the documents in the attached PDF (up to and including page 140). Then write an essay comparing these texts in terms of the working and living conditions, and the link between the respective environments (climate, diseases, but also natural resources) and these different forms of unfree labor. Remember our discussion about writing comparative essays; if you need to review, then re-read what Rampolla had to say about writing comparative essays. Do not just summarize each source separately. You need to directly compare them using categories of comparison (“in terms of” above); and identify similarities and differences.
Submission Guidelines
- Your essay should have a main argument as well as a logical structure. Review Starkey if you need a refresher.
- Your essay is evidence-based, which means you must back up your claims and anchor them in the primary sources.
- Your essay, as always must use Chicago-style citations format (meaning footnotes and not in-text citations). Uncited submissions will not be accepted. To make it easier on you, I scanned the first two pages of the edited volume the sources appear in. Remember that you have to provide full bibliographical information.
- The length of this assignment is 1100-1200 words. Please double-space for legibility.
- Other than your textbook and the primary sources, you are not allowed to consult any other source, be it another book, an online resource or tool (such as ChatGPT), or a peer. Your submission should reflect your own ideas. If you are using the textbook, you must cite it.
- Plagiarism= zero + reporting
- Avoid vague and ahistorical claims (“throughout history”). Your writing should be specific and detailed. Engage closely and directly with the sources.
- Do not quote from the texts. Remember that quotes never replace analysis and in fact weaken your writing overall. Opt for your own words and paraphrase if you need to.
- Upload your assignment to Blackboard in DocX or PDF. Other formats will not be accepted. I will grade the document you upload; it is your responsibility your assignment was uploaded properly and on time. Make sure you actually hit “submit” and not “save” (the latter will not submit your assignment and will result in an automatic zero).
- There are no “automatic extensions.” A late submission will incur a 5% per day penalty.
- Edit and proofread your work. Remember that you are being graded on writing style and clarity.
