Essay 1: Narrative
● Directions: Write a five-paragraph narrative memoir based on any of your
own experiences. Narrative memoirs must include: detailed imagery, setting,
characters, themes, and plot (event/events).
● Literary terms do not need to be in the following specific order. Feel free to
mix them up or reuse them to suit your narrative.
Paragraph 1: Introduction> Thesis (What do you remember?)
Supporting Points (expose the reader to what you they should first
know)
Paragraph 2: Point 1 (Imagery-Think of the five senses)
Paragraph 3: Point 2 (Characters-How did he/she/they act, think, look, speak,
affect)
Paragraph 4: Point 3 (Setting-time, place, social era, weather, season
economy, social class)
Paragraph 5: Conclusion (Summarize narrative, ending thoughts,
reflection/intentions for present/future)
● You do not need to focus on every aspect of the literary term, but make sure
to consider them when writing. It will help keep you on task when you “run
out of thoughts” !!!! ☺
● Generally a paragraph is 5-6 sentences. However, a narrative leaves space
for the writer to say more. The more description you include, the stronger
the essay.
