Write an essay comparing and contrasting Jan van Eyck’s “Arnolfini Wedding Portrait” to Masaccio’s “Expulsion of Adam and Eve”.
We have studied these great masterpieces by two great artists from different parts of Europe. What traditions characterize each artist’s county? Do these works of art reflect those traditions? Were these artists innovators? How (explain)? How does each artist represent the human figure? drapery? space? light? feeling? meaning? What does this tell us about local traditions and influences? What styles or artists influenced each artist? How does the artist’s style reflect the ideas of his time? How is each artist unique?
Be sure to identify each work by: Artist, title, style, date and medium. This essay is a comparison. Do not write two separate essays, but rather discuss the two works together, but in their own context. Develop your ideas, and give examples. Be sure to explain the significance of your observations. Be sure to use the vocabulary we learned about in the reading and films. This is your chance to show off what you have learned!
