how some of the ideas in it arise in your own life in embodied and relational
ways.

This prompt is all about giving you permission to take up the
ideas and concepts in the course that most impacted you – and to say something
about how they have helped you make sense of something that has to do with you
(about your upbringing, or what shapes your relationships, or how you see the
world, etc.)

To respond to this question, I
expect you to write in the first person. That does not mean you are writing a
journal entry though! I expect you to have an introductory paragraph, as usual,
that tells your reader what is going to happen in the paper. For example:
o “In this paper, I
am going to take up Mingus’ writing on accountability (reference), Walia’s
analytic of border imperialism (reference), and Fanon’s concept of lived
experience (reference) to make sense of key moments in my own life.
Specifically, I will think through how accountability has and has not been
offered to me; how borders have shaped and hindered my family’s attempts to
survive; and, how one particular lived experience when I first came to college
carries lessons and difficulties.”
o This is just a
suggestion and not the only way to begin this paper by any means!

First body paragraph:
o Mia Mingus uses
accountability as a window into empire and urges us to focus on apologizing as
a key skill for unlearning the logic of punishment. Thinking about all this in
relation to my own life shows me that the people close to me have been caught
up in punishment and teaches me this has long-lasting effects.

However you write your body paragraphs, the conclusion would be
a chance to tie everything together into some kind of overarching lesson you’ve
taken from the course; i.e. in becoming sensitized to how racialization shapes
the world we live in – and shapes ourselves.
