The purpose of this writing assignment is to give you an occasion to process and synthesize some of the themes, issues, techniques, and characters that have been the subjects of our reading
and discussion. In other words, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate that you understand
the shaping devices of fiction and how various authors use them to create their stories. What stories/ ideas/characters have interested you most in the works we have read in this part of the
semester? develop an essay of between 5-7 pages in which you develop a thesis about why that specific thing was so interesting, stimulating, thought-provoking. Did a particular work change your way of thinking about something in particular? What was it and how did it change your thinking? What was the most upsetting or
distasteful idea or character you read about? Analyze why.
You may show how two different authors approach the same topic.
You may compare and contrast two stories and/or characters in a similar context.
You may demonstrate how two authors are illustrative of Naturalism, Romanticism, or Realism.
Think of your own way of approaching the assignment.
Be sure to clear your topics with me before you begin writing if they do not fit into any of the above rubrics.
SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
Be sure your essay has a thesis sentence. Underline it.
You must write about more than one author. One can be a poet and the other a short story writer
or both can work in the same genre.
Do NOT summarize the stories or poems. Your reader has read them.
You may use secondary sources, but it is not a requirement.
Plagiarism is a major academic offense. If you use someone else’s word or ideas, be sure to document correctly.
Use MLA documentation style. Papers should be typed on one side of the paper only. Double-space.
Set your margin to one inch all around. Extra wide margins alert your reader that you are fudging on page count.
Title your essay.
