An applicant will have the opportunity to read a current article from a refereed journal. The content of that article can include dimensions of leadership, organizational behavior, leadership practice, theory, inferential research, and motivation, or combinations of these constructs. The applicant will then prepare a written document (writing sample).
The content of the applicant’s writing sample should include:
1. Summary of the article’s content.
2. A critique of the article’s content.
3. Statements of the relevance of the article’s content.
In addition, the writing sample should demonstrate an understanding of the article’s content. To that extent, the sample should reveal that the applicant is
(a) able to engage in analysis, that is, a critical examination that determines essence, what are the elements within the article and their relationships, (b) able to engage in synthesis, that is, the ability to combine separate components or elements of the article into a larger, perhaps more complex unit or entity, and
(c) able to engage in evaluation, that is, to make an appraisal of the value or worth of a concept, policy, or theory as it relates to practice.
