You are a consulting team preparing a presentation to advise a
business looking to modernise how they work and is interested to
know how AI can be an important aspect of a digital transformation
project in the organisation.
Your team is expected to: 1. review strategic drivers for adopting an
AI solution and explain how it can add business value to that
organisation; 2. Review the internal functioning of the organisation
and show how this AI solution can AUGMENT (not automate) the
type of work of a group of employees; 3. Show the design and
explain how the AI solution integrates and functions within the
Digital Workplace of that organisation.
Your team is expected to present slides with notes or an annotated
report to this business covering all the three aspects of the project.
You are a digital consulting team working on a project for one of three client organisations
described below. Your task is to propose an AI solution that is part of a new Digital
Transformation project that responds to new market dynamics affecting the company by
reviewing 1. strategic drivers and positioning of the business that push for AI adoption and
digital transformation, and 2. review the internal capabilities and structural arrangements
needed to adopt this new type of AI solutions and move the organisation towards the new
strategic positioning and business model.Your client is looking to make a radical change in response to emergent technological changes
such as AI solutions. This requires a review of new and emergent technologies and effects on
business model of the business, and a review of the digital work platform supporting day to
day work in the organisation and opportunities to integrate AI in work activities.
The three clients
The three clients you can work with are: 1. Global pharma company, or 2. A global
management consulting firm, 3. A Multinational retail bank. Below is a short description of
the current situation of the three organisations. (we have shosen the third Client)
Company 3: A multinational retail bank with offices around the world and headquarters in
the UK but a strong presence in Asia. The bank places a strong emphasis on local and
decentralised governance. Your client is the Head of the Retail division responsible for
managing all operations from all the branches of this bank in the UK, and the call centres that
support and serve individual customers and small businesses. This is the largest and important
division of the company and includes a variety of roles and functions, from customer facing
employees in branches and call centres, to back-office staff dealing with processes and
analysis of applications, payments, as well as nomadic staff visiting local SMEs and individual
customers. Although the bank is doing well, recently the financial market is being challenged
by Fintech smaller banks which provide a much better customer experience. Further the bank
currently has old fashioned work platforms which employees consider to be too process
driven and not engaging – employees say that “it is all about work”. Staff use it to perform
banking transactions, produce reports and inform customers of complex products such as
high-end loans, mortgages and wealth management as well as collaborate with colleagues on
projects. The CEO of the Retail division is based in the UK but has overall responsibility for the
Retail division across the world. She is interested in keeping staff informed about everything
in the business, reducing risks and cost of operations but, most importantly, is keen to create
a platform that reflects the values and purpose of the company so as to improve innovation,
retention and engagement in the workforce. The Retail division of the bank attracts many
new graduates every year and the average age of staff is low compared to other areas of the
bank. The culture of the bank is entrepreneurial, but strong regulation in the financial services
sector tends to stifle some of the more ambitious initiatives. Since the pandemic outbreak
the bank has had to move its operations online, and now all staff are working remotely. This
has increased the need to create a platform that enables employees to know what is going
on and collaborate across functions and areas of the organisation. The CEO is interested to
know how to reposition the retail bank in this new market dynamics and to develop a new
platform for digital work to enable everyone to work remotely but more importantly that
connects everyone and reflects the key values of the organisation.
Key requirements of your assignment
The main elements of your digital transformation project are:
– Review and respond to new market dynamics affecting your client, and develop a new
digital-driven business model that is consistent with emergent new technological
challenges and opportunities such as AI
– Review internal structures and capabilities needed to prepare the organisation for that
new business model Propose an AI feature that is part of a new digital workplace platform solution that could
for example enable employees to be better connected and collaborative, or more easily
access news and information at the local and more global levels, enable targeted
communications and engagement with underrepresented groups, and find relevant
knowledge across the organisation. At a more advanced level, it could pre-empt needs
for information or tasks, assist and support management decisions and learn from past
decisions, support senior management in strategic review and decision making, as well
as produce notes of meetings, assist in report writing and summarising information.
Your digital solution should reflect the specific business context in the organisation, as well as
its culture and internal structure, as well as the needs of specific groups of employees. While
the company profiles above are partially fictional, they reflect real organisations. These are
starting positions for your consulting team, so your team is supposed to do additional
research on real organisations in the same industry to add detail, and create a richer and more
detailed profile of your client organisation. You have a degree of “creative licence” to fill gaps
so you can create additional content that is realistic and “believable”, for example in creating
credible personas (a technique we will cover in class). However, you should try to find
information from real organisations on the web or through interviews with people from that
industry, as much as possible.
Final deliverable
The final deliverable is a presentation and report of a professional standard to your client that
should cover the following sections:
1)Review current situation and focus on problem / opportunity to address. Review
strategic drivers of the business, as well as existing processes using design thinking
methods such as empathy maps and personas.
2) Review digital workplace environment and possible use cases for new AI based
solution in the organisation.
3)Propose a new digital strategy and an AI solution for the organisation
4)Present a design of the frontend of an AI solution within a new digital workplace of
the organisation, and demonstrate how it works from a user perspective
5)Provide an integrated view of the digital transformation required in the organisation
that shows how the AI solution will add strategic value to the organisation
6)Overall reflection on learning: challenges, how the team worked, what would you do
differently?
