You have been reading many, many articles. I want you to put together a cohesive paper that flows – do not simply list a bunch of questions and answers. Try to imagine this could be published by Vox or NPR or Billboard or Buzzfeed or… the following topics are to use in the paper: PBS: Black women have deep roots in country music NPR: Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. Could her success help other Black women? (2/17/24) Countrytown: Black Female Country Artists You Should Know, and listen to a few examples embedded I the article https://calstatela.instructure.com/courses/106354/modules/items/7722643 https://calstatela.instructure.com/courses/106354/modules/items/7722646 please use these topics! You should discuss most of the following topics, and you MUST include an artist to discuss as an example to illustrate your viewpoints. These are suggestions to help you organize your thoughts for your paper. Do not simply answer them as a list of questions. You must work the content of your answers into a cohesive paper. Has the meaning of feminism changed for you since you began taking this class? Of the articles and videos and guest interviews we’ve had this semester, which ones resonated with you the most? What did you get from them? What have you learned about MUSIC in this class? Again, do not simply list vocabulary words. I want to know what has changed for YOU. Has your perspective on activism or advocacy changed, particularly through the arts? You must choose an artist who is different from the artist you chose for your first paper and who plays a different genre of music from your first paper and tell me about her. Tell me what YOU think about her music, her work, her advocacy, or anything that is important to YOU about this musician. Please cite specific examples from the articles, videos, and visits in your paper. BE SPECIFIC. Have you learned about challenges that women in the music industry face? Has your perspective on that changed? Perspectives on feminism and what is means to you – don’t just quote a definition from another source. Have you learned about or experienced genres of music you have not heard before? Did you know what intersectionality was before? Talk about your perspective on that. DO NOT just quote another source that defines the term. Have you learned about women that you hadn’t heard of before? Did you learn about women that you had heard of before but didn’t really know much about? Are you likely to pay more attention to the representation of women and female-identifying and BIPOC musicians now? PAPER GUIDELINES Your grade on this paper depends on: Expressing YOUR OWN original thoughts Following the guidelines Using proper grammar and punctuation Writing it in an organized, cohesive manner that flows from one thought to the next – like an article you would read in a major publication Turning it in on time Accuracy in discussing terminology, people, facts, etc. Expressing YOUR OWN thoughts Using YOUR OWN words Expressing YOUR OWN thoughts Do not refer to an artist by first name only, only that is the way she is referred to professionally. (ie: Madonna) FORMATTING GUIDELINES Your paper must have a title. Length: Minimum 1000 words to maximum 1250 words. Please do not go over! Turned in with text entry on Canvas via Turnitin. You may not have more than 25% similarity score INCLUDING properly cited quotations and bibliographic material. Must be organized in a cohesive, logical manner. Must be proofread, checked for proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Any specific statistics, facts, or quotes must be properly cited. All words and phrasing must be your own. Do not cut and paste ideas or phrases from other sources. Papers will be checked, and plagiarism of any form will not be tolerated. Penalties for plagiarism range from a failing grade on the paper to a failing grade for the class to being reported to the university for violations of academic integrity. Paraphrasing and splicing together other people’s words still counts as plagiarism. Using other people’s words but randomly changing a word here and there is still plagiarism. Papers that read as generic or not your own thoughts, will not be accepted. Papers that read as if they’ve been created using AI (including Grammarly) will receive a failing grade. Papers MUST be turned in with text entry or they will not be accepted. DO NOT simply put a link in the text entry box. Must include a bibliography. BIBLIOGRAPHY YOUR PAPER MUST INCLUDE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY WITH 3-5 SOURCES. (You may list more if you have ACTUALLY used them.) You should use end notes, and your bibliography MUST BE PROPERLY FORMATTED, including websites. PLEASE LOOK UP HOW TO PROPERLY FORMAT WEB-BASED SOURCES . Your bibliography should include all the sources you actually use. Don’t pad your bibliography with sources you don’t use just to make it look longer. Online sources must be formatted correctly. I don’t have a preferred style as long as you pick one and stick to it. (Chicago, MLA, etc.)
