Dear Students, This course will be handled through email. Do not use Canvas, for I will not be using it. If there is a need to call me, then you may. My office number is 601-979-2822. However, emailing me is the most effective way to communicate with me and my preferred method of communication. Feel free to email me at any time to answer your questions and I will do so to the best of my ability. I will not do the work for you, but I will address the structural matters of the course. During this 8-week session, I will offer one Zoom check-in or two Zoom check-ins that are completely voluntary; attendance is not required, but for your benefit if you take advantage of it/them. The date or dates will be determined later and stated in an Announcement, likely around the midpoint of the class. This or these sessions will be recorded and all students must make their face visible on video/camera and you must appear in real time. Failure to do so will lead to your removal from the Zoom session(s). Again, I will avail myself to offer feedback on written work or drafts. I will only provide broad and general comments to guide you, and those comments are not determinative of your overall grade. To receive feedback, your voluntary submissions must be in Microsoft Word so I can turn on and use Track Changes. There are deadlines or dates for when you should submit work for me to review. Those dates will be determined later and stated in an Announcement. It is likely that the due date(s) will be around the midpoint of the class. Keep in mind that this is a graduate course. There will not be any hand holding. Moreover, to be in a graduate course, you must have earned a bachelor degree. Use that experience and background to excel in this course. A lot of the decisions you will have to make are up to you. Do what is best for you and make sure that it works in terms of getting a very good grade. Also, if your issue or question involves doing some research to find out something, then conduct the necessary research. Refer to scholarly books and journal articles, maybe do a Google search for credible sources to answer your questions or to find examples of work. Your lone assignment for this course is to write a paper up to 10 pages, and no more than 12 pages, due on Thursday, December 5, 2024 by 11:59pm. It is worth 500 points. Double space your paper, use normal margins, insert page numbers, use Times New Roman 12-point font, and submit it using Microsoft Word. Create a title page and References page, which do not count as a part of the page length. Use in-text citations. The citation style for the in-text citations and the format of the References page does not matter to me so do what you want here. In addition to these specifications, your paper will be graded on a number of standards. It will be graded based on breadth and depth of coverage, use of the literature, use of language, and use of space. It will also be evaluated based on spelling, grammar, and punctuation. You do not have to write a literature review. However, read the relevant literature for how to discuss your thoughts more clearly and comprehensively. That is, use scholarly works for ideas and help on writing. The purpose of an explanatory paper is to explain, not describe. Do not use space on tangential topics that do not have a clear and direct effect on explaining the phenomenon in question. Do not write on the history of Blacks in America or the South, slavery, or racism in general. Instead, you might want to focus on (1) how legal, institutional, and systemic factors place Blacks at a disadvantage and prevent them from making their states blue and (2) how psychological factors such as white supremacy, white fragility, and intergroup relations between Blacks and Whites (contact hypothesis and racial threat hypothesis) have led to this phenomenon. (3) However, I am most interested in your explanations. I want to read why you believe this phenomenon exists, for your explanations will be given the most scrutiny and it is here where you really should focus your efforts, energy, and creativity. This will be where you may earn the bulk of the points possible. Your explanations should be logical and plausible.
