Indicate which you are using in the References section. If you do notknow which to pick, use ASA.- Failure to follow formatting instructions may result in a penalty. Do not get creative withthe font, margins, or spacing.

Writing Advice– Include your name and student number in the header and page numbers in the footerof each page.- Please use subheadings for each section. This will help to organize your work.- Wherever possible, write using your own words. This enables readers to gauge yourlevel of understanding of the subject matter.- Minimize the use of quotations. Paraphrase instead. Cite where your information iscoming from using in-text citations. Only use quotations if the meaning cannot becommunicated in another wording.- Academic writing tends to employ a third-person narrative style. Remember to writeusing a formal, non-conversational, yet accessible tone. Avoid the use of contractions.- Remember to edit your work. This will make it stronger.

Paper Instructions Your essay should start with the introduction of your topic, research question, a discussion of your case and an outline of your argument. Although most will use the same as those in the Outline Assignment, you are not locked in. You may change your topic, research question, case and/or academic sources, should you wish. For more information on these components, see the Outline Assignment Instructions.

The remainder of the paper is where you develop your argument drawing from your chosen academic sources, course concepts (from readings and lectures), case as well as any additional sources you may want to use. Think of these elements as threads that you are using to weave your answer to your research question. Also, when writing, think about the impact your topic has had on society and how your topic haschanged the way we think about youth, delinquency, deviance, crime and/or social control moregenerally. In your conclusion, highlight how your argument and paper could inform or add to the understanding of your case.

Since this is a minimum 15-page paper, think of ways to extend the argument. A possible way to do this is to think about how the answer to your research question could be used for prevention, advocacy, education, research, or social change. You could add this as a possible extra section near the end of the paper, if the paper is too short. You could also work in a second- or sub- research question, if need be.

Source Selection For your research paper, you will require a minimum of TEN academic sources. Thesesources should be articles from scholarly journals, book chapters or research reports fromgovernment websites. Five of your academic sources will likely come from your OutlineAssignment, although you may replace sources from the previous assignment, should you wish. Note that the TEN academic & one non-academic sources are the minimum requirements for this assignment. Better papers often bring in additional sources to support and expand theirargument. Although not necessary, you are welcome to use additional sources should you wish. These may consist of any acceptable academic or non-academic publication (journals, bookchapters, government or reputable organization websites, media articles, videos, documentaries,etc.). Again, wiki-type entries are never an acceptable source for academic papers. Be sure tocite all sources appropriately.

Assignment Overlap You are allowed an up-to one-page overlap with your Outline assignment. This is because aspects of your case description and introduction may be similar. This will vary significantly by class. Never assume that overlap is allowed across assignments and always check with the instructor. For this assignment, however, it is permitted, provided you cite yourself. If you are copying and pasting a paragraph or so, then it should be in quotation marks. If you are just copying over bits and pieces, then an intext citation will suffice – like this (Tatham, 2025).

Paper Structure Outline

Introduction (1-1.5 pages) – This is where you introduce your topic, research question, and outlinethe argument of your paper.- Also, briefly outline your case and explain its relevance.

Argument (8 pages) – This is where you answer your research question drawing from youracademic sources, course concepts (from readings and lectures) andany supplemental sources.- Think of this section as the typical 3-plus paragraph essay-style typeargument. You are, of course, welcome to structure this sectionhowever best facilitates your answering your research question(s).

Discussion (4 – 4.5 pages) – This is where you discuss your paper topic’s impact on society andhow it adds to our understanding of deviance, crime, and/or socialcontrol more generally.- This is also where you make connections between your researchquestion and the real-world.- You can also reflect upon what understanding the paper lends toyour case, if you’ve not done so elsewhere

Extension (Optional) (Whatever needed to meet required page count)– If under the required page count, think about how the answer to yourresearch question could be put to use in areas like prevention, advocacy, education, social change, or future research, etc.
